The Dale & Patricia Spurlock Memorial Arts Fund

Dynamic arts duo Dale and Patricia Spurlock impacted countless lives during their individual careers as artists, teachers and producers.

This annual scholarship is awarded to a chosen location to presents arts experiences, workshops and performances in order to continue their legacy of impacting lives using the arts.

Musician, composer, arranger, conductor, and teacher Dale was an upright bass player in jazz clubs throughout Indiana. He taught thousands throughout the years at St Mary of the Woods College, Martinsville High School and throughout the Columbus, Indiana school system teaching  orchestra, band and choir. He resurrected the 60 yr old Columbus, Indiana Symphony that he conducted for over 20 yrs, initiated the Columbus, IN Chamber Orchestra and Columbus Youth Orchestra all still in existence. He composed and arranged a library of over sixty selections for string quartet, band, and orchestra. A private instructor as well he taught the joy of music beyond the technique in a a way accessible and inviting to all.

Patricia (Pat) known for her joie de vivre was a painter, photographer, ceramicist, writer, and teacher. She taught art at Shortridge High School and Meridian Academy of the Arts making life-long impact and friendships with countless students.

She was Director of the Bartholomew County Historical Society and Executive Director of the Driftwood Valley Arts Council of Columbus, IN where she produced numerous artistic exhibits and festivals (May Faire & Pop Fest), and curated sculpture installations by renowned artists Jean Tinguely and Henry Moore. As a writer, she published two historic novels based on her family genealogy.

As a couple, twice they received the Mayor’s Community Arts Award before moving to Indianapolis in 1989.
